Burning Permits-Fire Pits and Outdoor Burning

A permit is required for all outside burning of clean, untreated (no paint or pressure treated) wood less than 5 inches in diameter. We can issue daily or seasonal permits for fire pits and campfires less than 3 feet in diameter. Other permits are limited to a few days. A special permit can be issued for large debris and clearing of lots, please contact your Forest Fire Warden.

State law states you cannot burn trash, building materials, plastics, etc. anymore.

You now have two ways to obtain a permit:

  1. ONLINE- go to the following link; Online Fire Permit site.    You can obtain either a single day permit or seasonal permit for a pit/fireplace less than 3 feet in diameter. There is a three-dollar ($3.00) fee which goes to the website manager, not the state or town. KFR can still inspect and cease burning if it is unsafe or if you aren’t following the rules as noted on your permit.
  2. PHONE- Call Kensington Fire Rescue (603)772-5751 any time before 4 pm preferably the day you want to obtain a permit. Follow the prompts to leave a message in the “burn permit” voice mailbox. A member will come out between 4pm and 6pm to inspect the site and issue the permit. We will be asking for an email address, so we can email you if burning is shut down due to high fire danger or weather concerns. You must be present to sign the permit. If you do not own the home/land, you must have dated, written permission from the landowner to burn before we can issue the permit.

If you have questions or would like more information, please contact the Forest Fire Warden or one of the Deputy Wardens by leaving a message in the “burn permit” voice mailbox at (603) 772-5751 or email FFW Jon True at 24chief1@comcast.net
