Potential Water Quality Compromise Notification

Potential Water Quality Compromise Notification

During a routine monitoring well test at Unitil in October, 2019, samples were taken from four monitoring wells that were put into place to monitor water quality following a petroleum release that happened in the 1990’s.  Recent legislation prompted Unitil to take samples from these wells for the purpose of testing for PFAS.

Preliminary results of these samples showed elevated levels of PFAS that exceed DES water quality standards.  Confirmatory samples have been taken and are being analyzed to confirm the elevated levels of PFAS and samples are being taken from nearby wells to determine if PFAS is present in the surrounding groundwater.

While this is not a confirmed presence of a water contaminant, The Kensington Board of Selectmen considers it of the utmost importance to notify the community.  If you have concerns as to your drinking water quality, it is suggested that you consume filtered water or bottled water that has been tested and confirmed that there is no presence of PFAS or other contaminants.  Information on effective methods of in-home water filtration can be found at: NHDES

In January 2020 and again in Spring of 2020, the Town of Kensington will be hosting a “Test Your Drinking Water” week where residents can have their water quality tested at a reduced rate.  Please stay tuned for dates and in the meantime, information related to this event can be found at:  Water Testing

As Information becomes available and confirmatory test results are received, the Town of Kensington website will be updated accordingly.  In the meantime, the following are some helpful resources:
